Line 5 was Beijing’s first subway line running from north to south. It runs for 27.6 km and remains the only line to follow an almost entirely straight north-south course. It entered operation in October 2007, and it is said that house prices along the line rose by over 23 percent in just three weeks immediately after the opening.
Line 5 was the first subway line in Beijing to have platform screen doors and LCD screens displaying the waiting times for the next trains.
The depots for the trains are located beyond the two termini – at Tiantongyuan North and Songjiazhuang stations.
Line 5 has remarkably little artwork to boast of, although the design of coloured support columns and lighting at certain stations do break the monotony somewhat...
The following stations on Line 5 have artwork:
Tiantandongmen
Dongdan
Dengshikou
Dongsi
Zhangzizhonglu
