Beijing Zoo station’s frescos, using glass mosaic technology, are themed ‘animal kingdom’ and are clearly loved by the children who pass them by. "Animal Paradise" at the station features children's graffiti works on the wall.
There are also large dollops of colour given out by the overhead designs.
Interestingly, the street signs outside still give directions to the transliterated version of the Chinese station name – ‘Dongwuyuan’ – though all maps now mark it as ‘Beijing Zoo’.
In the passageways leading into the station are other murals, depicting not just zoo animals, but also themes relating to two nearby museums – the Paleontology Museum...
and the Beijing Planetarium. This uses astronomy-related images, and are processed in spherical black and white. The material used is also selected to look like silk screen technology in order to highlight the realism and technological sense of the overall picture.
