The name Xidan (literally ‘West Single’) came from the ‘paifang’ ornamental gate that used to stand here. It has recently been rebuilt, and now stands at the Xidan Culture Square.
Xidan is one of the most famous shopping districts in Beijing and plays host to large indoor malls that have as many as ten storeys.
Lee Chen from Kyrgystan used forged copper plate with gold leaf for his work entitled ‘Old Beijing’. It features eleven folk festival performances.
The ‘Old Trademarks’ mural, by Chen Xiaolin, has a radiation structure with the corner pavilion of the Forbidden City in the centre as a symbol of Beijing. Over 20 old trademarks can be found throughout the design.
