Yuanmingyuan Park Station is located outside the south entrance to the Old Summer Palace in Haidian District.
Originally known as the Imperial Gardens, Yuanmingyuan was an extremely large complex of palaces and gardens, lakes and waterways, bridges, hills and pavilions that were razed to the ground during the Second Opium War by Anglo-French forces.
The three dates – 1707, 1860 and 1900, you see on the frieze – refer to the construction of the Old Summer Palace in 1707 during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor; the destruction of the palace in 1860; and the subsequent complete destruction in 1900 by the Eight-Nation Alliance when they invaded Beijing.
