The mural at Ciqikou is a reference to ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’ (also translated as ‘A Dream of Red Mansions’) – one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels – written by Cao Xueqin. It was composed sometime in the middle of the 18th century during the Qing Dynasty. The book is believed to be semi-autobiographical, mirroring the rise and decline of author Cao Xueqin’s own family and, by extension, of the Qing Dynasty.
The mural is a double-layer aluminium plate superimposed structure, which is made with traditional Chinese lacquer painting techniques and modern materials.
Cao Xueqin lived in the area now known as Ciqikou, but the house was demolished to make way for a road widening scheme.
