Qiaowan translates as ‘Bay Bridge’ and the station is located in the Three Mile River area where there is a bend in the river.
In 2010 due to the adjustment of administrative divisions, Chongwen district was merged into Dongcheng District, and there was local lobbying that Bay Bridge station should instead maintain its original planning name of Chongwen Three Mile River Station; but this was overruled.
