Guang’anmennei station is in an area famous for its many ethnic communities. The Muslim presence in the area is obvious with many Muslim shops, together with Niu Street Mosque nearby which was built in 996 and is the oldest and largest mosque in Beijing.
Just to the west of Niu Jie is Fayuan Buddhist Temple, which was built in 645 and rebuilt in 1436-1449, making it the oldest in the capital. It houses the Chinese Buddhist Academy and the centre for Buddhist cultural relics, and it is also an important institution training young monks and researching Buddhism.
