In the southern hall of NanluoguXiang station is a 20m x 3m mural called ‘Beijing Memories’.
Designed by the Vice President of the China Central Academy of Fine Arts, Professor Wang, it contains more than 4,000 6-cm-glass cubes made into a collage, and from a distance it looks like a silhouette in the form of old Beijing characters and scenes.
But take a closer look and you find each sealed block in the glass contains a memento given by local residents – such as a commemorative badge, a stamp, a thimble, a string of beads, old black and white photos and so on.
Onlookers can scan QR codes using their mobile phones to get more information about what they are looking at.
However, by the start of 2018, many of the sealed blocks had been removed, and the mural is now but a shadow of its former self. Sad!
Overlooking the two escalators going down to the platform are two murals. One depicts transportation based on rotating wheels and wings; the other uses kites, birds and windvanes – with the power of wind as their common theme.
