In Yongdingmenwai station there is a mural in the passageway linking line 8 to line 14. It is taken from an old photograph of the original Yonding gate and is certainly eye catching.
Also inside this station is a mini art gallery called the Central Axis Art Museum. Most people appear to hurry straight past it, though there are a few nice pieces on display...
For a start, there's an ' electronic photo frame' in which you can see the "High Map of Lushan Mountain" by the Ming Dynasty painter Shen Zhou, the meticulous flower and bird works of the court painter Yu Xun during the Qianlong period, the freehand ink painting horse of Xu Beihong, as well as oil paintings and photographic works. There are also displayed copies of drawings such as the longitudinal section of the Yongding Gate Tower and the front elevation of the Yongding Gate Arrow Tower.
Add to that a small selection of plates, drawings and paintings, and it would be worth your while to spend some 10 minutes here on your way to your final destination.
