LINE 10 – Sanyuanqiao (三元桥)

I always feel that this mural, by Tsinghua’s Fine Arts Academy, is on the wrong side of the station.

Sanyuanqiao is where you change trains on Line 10 to get onto the Airport Express. I’m sure it would therefore be much more suitable to have it positioned on the Airport Express side.

It was designed such that the world map pattern uses lights of different colours to reflect the distribution of world energy, reminding people of energy shortages and expressing the concept of environmental protection; but I have never seen this map lit up on the numerous occasions that I have passed through this station.

Others would have you believe that the creator chose the world map as his theme, to reflect the openness and tolerance of Beijing.

But no matter. Most people, if you ask them, have not even noticed that they have just walked past a gigantic map of the world, depicted not just once, but twice over!
