Close by Beiyunhe West station is the Tongzhou Canal Park, and this is what is featured in the station’s mural. It is called "Impression of the Capital " by Du Fei, Liu Kai and others.
The Grand Canal was the longest, largest, and one of the oldest canals in the world. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, the water level in the Tonghui River dropped and it was impossible for ships to travel from Tongzhou to Beijing. Tongzhou became the north shipping terminus of the canal and it became a prosperous town in its heyday, with ships and granaries dominating the area.
The section of the canal in Tongzhou has now been renovated, to create Tongzhou Canal Park, which was first created in 1936 and expanded in 1985.
