LINE 6 – Ping’anli (平安里)

The ‘Four Seasons’ peace study (Ping’anli means flat and tranquil neighbourhood) features a wall on which there are a number of auspicious patterns embedded in the grey brick walls of characteristic courtyards of old Beijing. These patterns - such as screen walls and gates - have the meaning of warding off evil spirits.

In the main ticket hall of the station, the majority of the columns are decorated with relief designs of vases containing different plants. They are very much understated but have much more impact because of that.

These two designs are by Ma Xiaoteng and Li Qing from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts.

They feature apple, pomegranate and magnolia trees and can be found over the escalators going down to the platform. This one is called "Everything is safe". According to the designers Ma Xiaoteng and Li Qing, the former residence of Mei Lanfang is very close by, and the creation of "Everything Ping An" is not only a homonym for the place name of Pinganli, but also implies a memorial to Mei Lanfang (reflecting the two persimmon trees planted in his courtyard) .
